The Donghai Guanyin Temple is a historically rich Buddhist temple located in the tourist area of Fengxian Bay, on the north bank of Hangzhou Bay at the southern tip of Shanghai, China. The temple was originally established during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, with a history of approximately 700 years. The main hall of the temple enshrines a golden statue of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, with the side halls dedicated to Manjushri and Samantabhadra respectively, and the Guanyin Pagoda within the temple complex stands nine stories tall.

The history of the Donghai Guanyin Temple dates back to the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. According to the "Songjiang Prefecture Chronicles," the temple was first built in the Yuan Dynasty's Huangqing Ren year (AD 1312), and during the Yuan Dynasty's Shaoxing years (AD 1151), a fisherman named Wu discovered the statue of Guanyin in the sea, thus forging an indissoluble bond with the Bodhisattva Guanyin. It is said that in the second year of Zhenming during the Later Liang Dynasty (AD 916), the Japanese high monk Huigao came to Wutai Mountain to pay homage and requested to take a sandalwood statue of Guanyin back to Japan for veneration. However, due to divine will and Zen opportunity, Huigao was unable to successfully cross over to Japan and ultimately enshrined the Guanyin statue at the twin peaks of Mount Putuo in the East China Sea. In order to universally save all beings, Guanyin Bodhisattva chose the Fengxian Bay as her worldly site, which led to the Donghai Guanyin Temple becoming a thriving Buddhist sanctuary.
