中国航海博物馆
The China Maritime Museum is located on the west bank of Dishui Lake in the Lingang New City of Pudong, Shanghai, and is currently one of the most comprehensive maritime-themed museums in China. Visiting the museum allows you to learn about the history of Chinese shipbuilding and the evolution of navigation technology through various ship models, graphic and textual introductions, and physical displays of navigation instruments. You can also experience simulated navigation firsthand or board a replica of a Ming Dynasty treasure ship to understand ancient shipbuilding techniques. Additionally, you can visit the 4D dynamic cinema for an immersive film experience, making it an excellent educational destination for young people to learn and expand their knowledge.
The museum consists of three floors, but the exhibition halls are distributed across the first and second levels. Both floors have exits, while the entrance is located on the second floor. After entering, you can take an escalator down to the first floor to begin your visit. The museum offers free guided tours, typically once in the morning and once in the afternoon for each exhibition hall. It is recommended to follow the guide's explanations and visit in order. You can also learn to tie sailor's knots from the guide. Upon entering, pay attention to the signboards for the explanation times or consult the staff. If you miss the free guided tour, you can rent an audio guide at the service center near the entrance for 10 yuan per unit, or hire a paid guide for 50 yuan per hour (in Chinese). The museum usually offers free admission to the public on China Maritime Day, July 11th, so it is advisable to keep an eye on the museum's official website for updates.
The first floor houses the Navigation History Hall, Ship Hall, Seamen Hall, and a special exhibition area for fishing boats and fishing. Here, you can see graphic and video introductions related to the history of Chinese navigation, as well as various navigation equipment such as diving suits, underwater robots, models of domestic and international ships, cabin interiors, and instrument models. You can also experience operating a crane to lift containers and steering a ship in a simulated operation cabin. The atrium features a full-scale replica of a Ming Dynasty treasure ship, also known as the "Great Ming Treasure Ship" used by Zheng He during his voyages to the West.It is said that this is a functional ship capable of sailing, and you can board it for a tour. Additionally, there is a restaurant on the first floor offering Chinese set meals, with two options at 30 and 40 yuan each, which taste decent.
The second floor is home to the Navigation and Ports Hall, Maritime and Marine Safety Hall, Military Navigation Hall, and a special exhibition area for maritime sports and leisure. On this level, you can learn about the construction history of the Chinese Navy, ports, and marine rescue, as well as view exhibits such as warship models, naval flags and uniforms, and actual naval artillery. It is particularly interesting to step into a simulated submarine control cabin for an exploration. Furthermore, this floor also includes a planetarium, 4D cinema, and children's activity center. Tickets for 4D movies need to be purchased separately (about 30 yuan per ticket, with films lasting about ten minutes).
