Located in the northeast of Yu Garden Tourist Business District, Shanghai Yu Garden is adjacent to Chenghuang Temple in Shanghai and Yu Garden Tourist Mall in Shanghai. It is a well-known classical garden in the south of the Yangtze River and a famous scenic spot at home and abroad. In 1982, it was approved by the State Council as a "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit".
Yu Garden was first built in Jiajing and Wanli years of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 450 years. The owner of the garden, Pan Yunduan, once served as the Sichuan Governor. In order to allow his father to enjoy his later years, Pan Yunduan began to gather stones, chisel ponds, construct pavilions of bamboo, and build gardens in his own vegetable fields from the Jiajing Jiwei year of the Ming Dynasty (1559). After more than 20 years of painstaking management, Yu Garden was built.
"Yu Garden" means "peace" and "peace". Yu Garden was initially built, covering an area of more than 70 mu. It was carefully designed by Zhang Nanyang, a famous garden maker in the Ming Dynasty, and personally participated in the construction. The whole garden is grand in scale and beautiful in scenery.
The current Yu Garden covers an area of 2 hectares, with uneven pavilions, towering rocks and green trees. It is characterized by seclusion, beauty and exquisiteness. It has the characteristics of seeing the big from the small, reflecting the artistic style of garden buildings in the south of the Yangtze River in the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Yu Garden still has historical sites such as the "Library", the birthplace of "Shanghai Style Calligraphy and Painting", and the "Dianchun Hall", where the headquarters of Shanghai Xiaodao Society Uprising is located. The ancients of all dynasties praised Yu Garden as "the most beautiful garden in the southeast" and "the most famous garden in the southeast".
Many political leaders and celebrities at home and abroad have visited Yu Garden, which is a rare traditional cultural card of Shanghai.
