Shanghai Museum on People's Square: To provide the public with a rich visiting experience, some galleries in Shanghai Museum on People's Square is reopen for free since December 10, 2023 (Chinese Calligraphy Gallery, Chinese Painting Gallery, Chinese Minority Nationalities’ Art Gallery).

Shanghai Museum on People's Square opens from 09:00 to 17:00 (latest entry at 16:00), closed on Mondays (except national holidays).

Shanghai Museum East: Since February 2, 2024, the Bronze Gallery and the special exhibition Stars over China: The Ancient Shu Civilization of Sanxingdui and Jinsha will be open to the public in Shanghai Museum East for trial operation.

During the trial operation, Shanghai Museum East opens from 10:00 to 18:00 (latest entry at 17:00), closed on Tuesdays (except national holidays). To ensure safety and optimize visiting experience, reservations are required, and there is a limit of 8000 visitors per day. Thank you for your understanding.

Individual visitors can book the visits 7 days (including the current day) in advance through the official Wechat account (clicking Go-上博-参观预约) or the official mini-app 上海博物馆参观预约 on Wechat.

There are two reservation links for Shanghai Museum East (No. 1952, Century Avenue) and Shanghai Museum on People's Square (No. 201 Ren Min Da Dao) respectively. Please select the location carefully and arrive at the museum within the selected time slot.


Museum History

The Shanghai Museum, established in 1952, is one of the most important ancient Chinese art museums in the world. It is among the first national top-class museums. The Museum's collection covers 33 categories, inlcuding nearly 1,020,000 items, 140,000 of which are graded national treasures. As one of the most complete collections of ancient Chinese art, the Museum's collection shows a comprehensive image of Chinese material culture.

The Museum aims to exhibit the Chinese culture and facilitate the cultural communication among different countries and cultures. Through collecting, conservation, research, exhibitions, and communication, the Museum continues to connect the public with artworks, art history, and art education.

In the future, Shanghai Museum will live in three sites: Shanghai Museum East, Shanghai Museum on People's Square, and Shanghai Museum North. The Museum also plans to collaborate with museums abroad for collection sharing programs. The Museum holds the principles of cooperation, openness, and inclusiveness, which constantly motivates the Museum to contribute to the the development of the international museum community.

Shanghai Museum East

Shanghai Museum East is located at No. 1952 Century Avenue in Pudong New Area. It focuses on exhibiting ancient Chinese art. There are 20 galleries and interactive spaces in the building, among which the Bronze Gallery, the Calligraphy Gallery, the Painting Gallery, the Seal Gallery, the Ceramics Gallery, the Numismatics Gallery, and the Jade Gallery systemetically present on the ancient Chinese art history. Themed exhibitions on Jiangnan culture and Shanghai calligraphy and painting are also part of the permament display. The interactive spaces provide the audience with enriched visiting experience. Shanghai Museum East aspires to become a key site for enjoying cultural life and learning about Chinese cutlure.

Shanghai Museum on People's Square

Shanghai Museum on People's Square is located on No. 201 Ren Min Da Dao. It focuses on world civilizations, presenting special exhibitions on different cultures and putting the Shanghai Museum collection in dialogue with artworks from the museums and institutions abroad. The Museum will also expand the landscape of collection and provide the audience with more diverse exhibitions.

Shanghai Museum North (In Preparation)

Shanghai Museum North (salvaged shipwrack Yangtze River Estuary No.2 ) will be located at the previous site of Shanghai Boat and Ship Building Company in Yangpu district. The Museum is scheduled to be completed before 2030.

The Museum mainly focuses on the research of underwater archaeology, aiming to provide an interactive space for exploring the charm of archaeology.
